Legend to Chinese Astrology

One day the jade king felt bored in heaven and had nothing to do. It was not possible for him to see the earth. This is why he decided to send one of his many servants to the earth to at least see the animals that inhabit the earth. The first invitation went to the rat, that promised the servant to let the cat know. However, the rat was jealous of the cat so decided not to let her know.

Thereat the servant invited the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat (depending on the tradition also the sheep), the monkey, the rooster, and the dog. These came to the king in the exact same order. But the king was wondering where the 12th animal (the cat) remained. In distress the servant ran into a man who was carrying a pig. He took the pig rashly and brought it to the king.

After the ceremony, the cat noticed in the meantime that she was invited too. She begged that she was allowed to come too. The cat, however, was rejected by the king because she was too late.

One more Legend

2722623_web_R_K_B_by_Rainer Sturm_pixelio.deThere is one more legend with which the origin of Chinese astrology can be explained. After this, one day Buddha called all the animals of the earth together to celebrate a festival. But only twelve animals appeared as representatives instead of the entire animal kingdom.

To the honor and appreciation of these animals Buddha named each year after these animals. The names were ordered in the sequence the animals came to the king. So, the order came together, which you can see in the characteristics of each zodiac sign.[/text_output][line id=”” class=”” style=””][text_output]

The Chinese New Year – New Year Festival 春節 / 春节

chinese-lantern-932217_1280

The Chinese New Year’s festival is the most important holiday in the People’s Republic of China. Especially from the economically strong regions of the country, a lot of Chinese go home to the rural regions to celebrate this festival with the family. With a population of nearly 1.4 billion people, it is often referred to as the largest, annual mass migration of peoples. But the New Year’s festival is also celebrated outside of China. The biggest New Year’s festival outside of China takes place in London.

The beginning of the New Year’s festival begins according to our Gregorian calendar, every year on a day, between 21 January and 21 February. According to the traditional Lunisolar calendar, also known as the lunar calendar, a new month always starts to a new moon.

31. January 2014 馬 Chinese Year of the Wood Horse
19. February 2015 羊 Chinese Year of the Wood Goat
8. February 2016 猴 Chinese Year of the Fire Monkey
28. January 2017 雞 Chinese Year of the Fire Rooster
16. February 2018 狗 Chinese Year of the Earth Dog
5. February 2019 猪 Chinese Year of the Earth Pig
Not only in China, but especially in the geographic area of East Asia (China, Korea, Mongolia, Okinawa, Taiwan, Vietnam), the New Year festival is one of the most important holidays.

The mythology around the Chinese New Year festival

According to an old legend, a man-eating monster came out of the mountains at the same time of the year, after it has taken a long and deep sleep, to satisfy his hunger. The people quickly noticed that the monster Niánshòu was frightened by noise and even more of the color “red”. Because of that there is the tradition of the fireworks as well as the decoration of the apartments and the streets with red lanterns, which are to bring luck.

There is one thing you will remember forever, if you ever have the chance to be in China during the New Year’s Festival but also in London: The so-called lion dance or dragon dance.

This goes back to the Emperor Ch’ian Lung of the Qing Dynasty (17th century to the proclamation of the Republic, 1912). Ch’ian Lung had a dream of a mythical creature from whose center of the head had a horn. After the consultation with the scholars of the court, the conclusion was reached that this was probably a lion. With that, the lion wanted to show the Emperor that he was equally standing. The residents of the town of Lingnan wanted to fill this mythology with more life and thus created the “lion dance” after some time.

Traditions around the Chinese New Year

Chinese Lucky Coin

Traditionally before the actual New Year’s Day, the house or apartment is cleaned to leave bad things of the old year behind and to newly decorate in afterwards. Since the color red stands for happiness, joy, but also prosperity, red lanterns are suspended everywhere. Gold-colored lucky signs are often painted on the walls and banners with saynings are hung up on the doors.

Lucky Charm

Generally, everything new is in focus, so you go to the hairdresser before getting rid of old loads, you clothe yourself with new stuff or paint the apartment quickly. On the eve of the New Year, money gifts are exchanged in red envelopes (Hong Bao) within the family at a great feast. Here, however, you do not eat everything empty. Shortly after 11 pm you leave the house to carry out all the loads of the last year. Directly afterwards in the apartment all windows are opened to let in the luck of the new year into the house.

More Lucky Charms

  • To let the light burn during the whole feast day in order to lighten the path to the house, but also to scare evil spirits.
  • Open all windows and doors so that luck can come in.
  • Everything that happens on the first New Year’s Day reflects the upcoming year.
  • To start the new year with new slippers and throw away the old shoes equals stripping of bad rumors.

It is to avoid to

  • buy new shoes or books during the first days of the new year.
  • cut hair during the holidays, as you would cut away the luck,
  • wear white (symbol for death) or black (symbol for bad luck) clothes as well as talking about death,
  • to clean in the first days of the new year since one would clean the luck away.
